So on Saturday night my wife wanted to go see Bob Dylan play, even though he has a rep of being terribly uneven in his shows. Actually he was evenly bad, with a flat band, a froggy voice and a bored, minimalist vocal delivery.

For me, the most interesting aspect of the show was that Dylan was dressed up like a late 19th century Old West cavalry officer, with a flat broad-brimmed hat, snug brass buttoned jacket, and pants with yellow stripes on the outside, as seen here on the left.

For all that, he didn't display rank insignia, wear a sword or play "Garry Owen," as far as I could tell. Given his thumpy band, it would have been hard to distinguish it from his 2010 version "Desolation Row."

Army

"(Dylan) also writes about his childhood fascination with the military. "Before I knew I was going to be a singer and my mind was in full swing, I had even wanted to go to West Point," writes the man who would later pen the anti-war anthem "Masters of War."

"I'd always pictured myself dying in some heroic battle rather than in bed.""

Foreign Policy

Don't you as a foreign policy expert have better things to do than attend a concert favored by your wife and then write a lame review of an artist about whom you know nothing? Pathetic. Absofuckinlootley pathetic.

Aha!

Go home Bob. You're old, a decrepit old has-been. I knew you'd be here trying to defend your terrible performances. Go shuffle off to bed mumbling Don't Think Twice to your mother, you disappointment.

Bob Dylan and the 19th Century

Bob Dylan's song Tangled Up in Blue seems at times to go back and forth between the present and the past with some hints at Henry Ward Beecher. He wrote 'Cross the Green Mountain for the Civil War film Gods and Generals. In his memoir Chronicles he writes of spending hours in the New York City public library reading contemporary accounts of the Civil War on microfilm.

I saw him last night in NJ and it was anything but bland.

Larry K is right

Tom,

I agree with Larrry K. I don't read your blog for reviews of Bob Dylan shows. Please stick to current events/foreign policy,

Write what you want, Tom, but ...

... I saw Bob in Kalamazoo a couple weeks ago, and it was among the best concerts I've ever seen, probably the best from Bob in many years. His voice is shot--has been for many years (some say always!)--but he can still do things emotionally with it that far better (technically) singers can only dream about. And the band was hot!

Larry K fails...

You and I obviously did not see the same Bob Dylan.

Thomas E. Ricks covered the U.S. military for the Washington Post from 2000 through 2008.
