Iraq, the unraveling (XVII): Disquiet on the western front
Mon, 10/19/2009 - 10:21am
Over the weekend, someone dynamited the bridge outside Ramadi on the main highway that goes from Baghdad west to Jordan and Syria. There also were two bombings in Fallujah, one killing 11 Iraqi soldiers, the other taking down an Iraqi officer's house. Also 14 people were killed in the bombing of a mosque in Tell Afar. This is all so 2004.

Anbar Pretty Calm
Every time there's a big bombing in Anbar the papers are full of stories about whether the insurgency is returning. There's some low level violence, but it's hardly anything compared to the really dangerous places in Iraq like Mosul. From April to July 2009 for example, there were only 92 security incidents recorded by the U.S. Compare that to 454 in Ninewa for the same months. In the 3rd quarter of 2009 there have only been an average of 24 deaths in the entire province.
I've said this before, but you cannot judge the security situation in Iraq by some high profile attacks. It gives a very distorted view.
Here's a rundown of the security situation in Anbar presently:
