Prof. Cohen's counterinsurgency picks

Readers of this blog know I am a big fan of reading lists. Here is a good one on counterinsurgency from Eliot Cohen, one of the smartest people I've ever met, and author of Supreme Command, among other books.

Never in America

Presently I am trying to find an apartment and am amazed at the difficulty of convincing someone to take my money. All the boxes have to be checked before I can get a roof over my head, regardless of how much cash I have in hand. To have an insurgency you must have people to hide you or a wilderness (or slum) to hide in, and gold to finance the violence. Ready cash does not seem to buy much on the black market here except marijuana, and there is no place to hide from millions of consumers with cell phones who do not want an insurgency interrupting their shopping. There can be no insurgency in America and we have all the resources we need here to be self-sufficient and nukes to smite anyone who directly attacks us from the outside. So I am not really interested in COIN. Unless you own stock in EXXON or are looking at deploying, I don't think it matters. Just my opinion and I am nice and welcome any debate. But please, no smarmy snide veiled insults.
