There's a bill before Congress now to turn six former military bases into emergency shelters. I have a better idea: Turn them into holding tanks for aging baby boomers, especially those whose retirement nest eggs have been evaporating. Several of the bases in the congressional bill appear to be in Florida and California, perfect homes for those formerly golden years.
Maybe they should keep some bases operating..
Execution of the current base closure and realignment activities should have a re-look given the current housing downturn. In New Jersey several thousand high value homes near Ft Monmouth will be placed on the market in a softening real estate market by civil service to be relocated at government expense (about $250k/head)to a more restricted market in rural Maryland. Pulling air from a bubble to inflate another. This should be a show stopper that even a lethargic Congressional delegation from New Jersey might snap at. BRAC activities which formerly moved about in a vacuum now have real impact among the citizenry not all of which is good.
If you wish to pin all the blame for the collapse of Capatilism at the hands of the baby boomers , Yes this is a way of punishing them.
But war is often the consequence of encomimic failure and also pradoxically , one of the ways to realign it.
The baby boomers in your country suffered the ignomony of the draft- but got rid of it for the next generation.
the baby boomers brought you the Beatles, the computer , some cancer curess, viagra, cardiac stents , bypasses.
And you want to corall them like the cattle herds..
Somehow , this strikes me as ingratitude,
