It'll be interesting to watch the Armed Services Committee hearing today on Obama's Pentagon picks in part to see how John McCain behaves.

As he returns to Congress, McCain is for the first time in many years not running for president. My guess is he will be essentially the same, but tougher and even less controllable, especially on issues like the future of the super-expensive F-22 fighter. (I recently was reading an excerpt from a 1935 article in the Army's Infantry Journal -- doesn't everybody? -- and was surprised to see that back then an airplane was far less costly than a tank. That is certainly not the case now.)

"The fun thing to watch will be McCain at Armed Services now that he understands that is where he must make his mark," says one veteran Senate aide. "Lots of hard, hard choices on defense spending and McCain still has the energy to play a significant role, which is bad news for a lot of defense contractors."

McCain might rise up about Gitmo

Would like to hear John McCain make a statement like:

"Gitmo is a burning insult to those who in the past bore torture on behalf of our Constitution. It must not be continued one more moment. Its contents are to be promptly released. If we fear some of them, we still must release them. I have confidence that my shipmates from the Naval Academy and brothers and sisters from the other military academies have the wherewithal to assure that they will never act against us again. This is for what we value their institutions and services. I am sure that shipsmates such as Jim Stockdale would join me in demanding this restoration of American principles and courage.

Thank you, Barack Obama you do us all well. Godspeed"

Rise up, John!

Mr McCain, America needs you even more today.

I personally believe that the amount in money at stake in the DOD contracts, if rationalized and well monitored could:
1- Reduce up to 20% of our economic pains without quitting any mission or war.
2- Help us compensate who sacrificed for America better and recruit more of the best young men and women in the armed forces.
Mr. McCain >> you must never quit...
